PTC Overview

The Preliminary Theological Certificate (PTC) is an affordable unaccredited course that will help you grow in your personal knowledge of God’s word.

Each unit of study will help build your understanding and appreciation of the biblical, theological and historical foundations of the Christian faith. The study materials have been written and developed by Moore College Faculty.

It has flexible study options, offering online or correspondence modes of study as well as the option to attend PTC Evening Lectures to supplement your learning.

There are 3 PTC units (Doctrine 3, New Testament 4 and Apologetics) that are not yet online and can only be completed by correspondence. The 19 units which are online can also be studied in correspondence mode by purchasing printed PTC notes and doing a paper exam.

You are given access to the Online Learning Environment (OLE) which contains the online PTC course materials, including online PTC notes, quizzes and feedback.

You can Enrol and/or Subscribe to study. The differences between Enrolment and Subscription study are shown in the table below. Either or both options can be chosen.

Enrolment Information

Each PTC enrolment is for 6 months. The exam must be completed in this 6 month period.

From 2019, you can start your 6 month enrolment period at any time.  This means that enrolments are no longer restricted to set terms.

For online units, your basic enrolment fee includes 6 months of access to your enrolled PTC unit in the Online Learning Environment (OLE) which contains the online course materials (PTC notes, quizzes, feedback) and the online exam. There is a paper exam option for an extra cost.

For Doctrine 3, New Testament 4 and Apologetics, which are not online, the enrolment fee includes printed PTC notes and a paper exam.

Assessment

Assessment gives you the opportunity to consolidate your learning and recognise your achievement.

The PTC assessment for each enrolled unit is one 90 minute exam.  Most online exams comprise 60 multiple choice questions. Other exams may be short answer questions.  The exams are based on the content of the PTC notes only.

You can do your exam online or purchase a paper exam.

Online exams can be done at any time in your 6 month enrolment period.

Paper exams require an exam supervisor and can only be done during a paper exam window.

Paper exam windows in 2019

An online exam is included in every enrolment, however, you may purchase a paper exam if preferred.

There are four Paper Exam Windows in 2019, so students can choose an exam window towards the end of their 6 month enrolment period.

  • 9 – 15 February
  • 21 – 27 June
  • 13 – 19 September
  • 22 – 28 November

PTC Lecture Series options

Each year, four PTC units are taught as PTC lecture series at Moore College. This provides an opportunity for local students to learn from Moore College faculty.  The lectures supplement the PTC notes for the unit being taught. Assessment is based on the PTC notes only.

You have the option to purchase a Lecture series when you enrol in one of the offered units.

The PTC Lecture Series for 2019 will be on Tuesday evenings (7.00–9.00pm). Each series runs for 6 weeks.

Series 1 19 Feb – 2 April (not 26/3) Pentateuch (Old Testament 1)
Series 2 30 Apr – 4 June Christian Worship
Series 3 16 July – 20 Aug (not 6/8) Mark (New Testament 1)
Series 4 17 Sep – 29 Oct (not 1/10) Apologetics

For your advance planning, Ministry, Old Testament 2, John and Early Church History are set to be taught as evening lecture series in 2020.

PTC Group enrolments

It is possible to enrol individually and study simultaneously in a group context with other students (e.g. as a group of friends). Students simply use the individual online registration form to enrol themselves online. In this case, they are not formally linked by Moore College as a PTC group.

If you are a bible study group leader, minister or School Chaplain wanting to run a PTC group, you can complete a PTC Group Enrolment Form and email it to distance@moore.edu.au. This will enable you to select the PTC units, start dates, exam formats etc on behalf of your group, which can facilitate the enrolment process. In this case, you would need to organize payment and receive any books ordered for your group. As a Group leader, you will be kept updated with Distance News. Each Group member receives their own Student ID and password to access the online learning environment.

PTC Subscription (from 2019)

A PTC Subscription is an annual subscription.  It gives you reading access to the online PTC notes and interactive quizzes for all 19 online PTC units for one year. This option would suit PTC Group Leaders, past PTC students who want continuing access to completed units, or those students seeking to familiarise themselves with the study material before formally enrolling in a PTC unit.

A PTC Subscription is not the same as an enrolment. No exams are included, and no formal recognition or award is offered for PTC Subscription study.
